Cleveland Golf's 1st Tour Rep Dies
Article appearing in Golfweek Magazine -- Page 47
July 15, 2000

Richard G. Meckley, Cleveland Golf 's first tour representative, died of cancer June 28 in Jacksonville, Fla. He was 81. The former minor league baseball announcer entered the golf equipment business late in his career, when at age 64 in 1983, he was hired by Roger Cleveland to serve as the company's first rep on the PGA Tour. Meckley, who worked 10 years at Cleveland, received from players the nickname- Lo Tec Meck- for his love of persimmon woods.

After leaving Cleveland Golf, Meckley worked as a tour rep for Ben Hogan Golf Co. and Wood Bros. Golf Co. He retired in 1996. Meckley's post-retirement years were spent mowing the greens at the TPC at Sawgrass and serving as administrative consultant to superintendant Fred Klauk. Memorial contributions may be sent to the Dick Meckley 17th Green Golf Fund: Attention Bob Whiddon, SouthTrust Bank, P.O. Box 809, Dothan,AL,36302. Survivors include his wife Ginny, two sons, a step-daughter, sister and grandson. A memorial service was to be held July 11 at the TPC at Sawgrass.
